Brakes make groaning/clunking noise - 03 Corolla Sign In

Video (and audio) of the sound.

See the video above for the sound. It is periodic, not constant. The noise started last night and sounds like it comes from the left rear portion of my vehicle. It occurs only when braking (not just coasting) and is most noticeable at lower speeds. It doesn't happen every time I brake, but about 70% of the time. My car had 60k scheduled maintenance done just a week and a half ago. My brakes were inspected, cleaned and adjusted and I was told I have 40% and 50% life left on my front and rear brakes, so I definitely wasn't expecting any braking issues. I haven't driven in any extreme conditions since the maintenance. Performance wise, the braking feels fine, is responsive, and the only symptom is the noise.

Watch the video. At the end is just the sound of me applying the brake while in park. The higher-frequency rattling sound you may hear has always happened at lower RPMs since I got the car 5 months ago and seems to come from the rear of the car. I don't think it's related.

I looked at my wheel as best I could without jacking it up and don't see any foreign objects in the area, but I didn't take anything apart and am not sure what I'm looking for.

Thoughts? And how safe is this to drive for a few days?

You should swing back to the shop that did the clean and adjust and have them take a peek just to be on the safe side.

As DS said it has to go back for inspection of what and why.

My parts look up is iffy on this pup and could be wrong as to the parts/hardware for a DRUM rear brake. I also showed disc was available and not sure of either.

If a drum brake it's supposed to self adjust but many don't after some time and adjuster might be able to just lube up again. If correct it looks like this......

If this required taking the brake all apart the other hardware may have all be removed as well. Pic shows parts for both rear but you can see how much junk is in there unseen with drum on....

If all those came out to clean up and get the self adjuster working they might have broken or who really knows with out looking?

10 years? Sometimes if that stuff is original and might be they just don't tolerate being removed and installed again without some risk of a problem. This stuff is dirt cheap as things go. If something fell down it could ruin the entire brake so get it looked at real soon,

T
