Brake shudder/ strangely worn brake pads... Sign In

Hi.

I have a Toyota Ipsum (picnic) 240 S 2002 ex Japan.

I know nothing about cars, so I always use a professional!

Recently I took it in for a 100,000km service with my Toyota service and repairer. They advised to have my front brake pads replaced, which they went ahead and did.

Over the next month, I felt there was something not right, but hoped it was to do with the new brakes 'bedding in' or something like that. It got to the stage where I asked an aquaintance what could be the problem, just had my brakes done, often when I brake on the open road to slow down to turn into a side road, the steering wheel shakes a lot.

Was informed immediately that the repairer must not have 'skimmed the discs' (this person did not look at or touch the car))

Back to my repairer, and told them the problem, and related what I had been told was the problem. They checked, and agreed, the discs had not been skimmed, so I booked it in for two days later to have the work done.

When I went to pick up the car after the work had been done, they said to me "Someone has used a grinder on these brake pads" I assued them no-one had touched the car since the work had been done. They basically called me a liar.

So I rang back and spoke to the boss, explaining that no-one had touched the car, and the only logical explanations for the extra wear were

a) faulty brake pads

b) the brake shudder itself had caused the excessive wear.

They clearly do not believe me, and keep insisting someone has ground them down 'beviled the edges' they said.

My point is that they should have seen the discs needed skimming while they were replacing the pads originally, and they are at fault, as NO-ONE has done anything to that car inbetween the two lots of work that they themselves did.

Where do I go from here? I am back at square one, with a car with stuffed brake pads.

In the past 6 weeks I've paid them over $900 for a service, brake pads, discs skimmed, new oxygen sensor etc.

So I'm feeling really upset and put upon.

Any ideas??

Thanks

Angie.

What brand brake pads? There are a lot of brake pads that have beveled edges.

As clearly shown some pads will be beveled.

From your post this job was hacked. You may not get satisfaction from that place from the sounds of it so probably find another place dealer or independents do brakes all the time,

Thanks, I don't know what brake pads sorry, I've persuaded them to go back to their supplier with the pads, as my assertion is they must be faulty. (They refuse to believe the shudder had anything to do with it)

The mechanic who fitted them originally told me he had ground the edges slightly when fitting them, but 'nothing like this' he reckoned.

So tomorrow the car goes back, they are going to open her up, take photos of the pads (I'm going to get photos of my own) and send the photos to the supplier to see what they say. (The owner of the repairers reckons they won't accept the pads are faulty, as he doesn't believe I am telling the truth)

I have rung the NZ Automobile Association, and they have told me my next step if I get no satisfaction is to put in a complaint with the Motor Traders Association.

So, we will see what happens, but regardless, they have lost every bit of my trust, and I have a new AA approved mechanic lined up for the future.

Thanks for your input :)

Too much too fast for the odd wear IMO.
Defective? Maybe? I've had to grind just some metal off of backing plates to fit pads into a caliper. They were still fine. Know that there are many quality grades of pads and rotors out there.

Cheapest is not usually very good if so,

They are a Toyota dealership, so I would hope they are using genuine parts??

Thanks.

One would hope OE grade parts - yikes you pay for it. Can't speak for all of course but dealers also have accounts with other sources.

Got the T-Shirt. Left a Ford Dealer over it! Wouldn't take a shopping cart to that place - OMG - it happens! Long time ago now.

Hey - we all volunteer here with some VERY well qualified and diverse expertise - free to you so please don't think mechanics are all out to get you. Conversely my own tenure was to please a person and do my dang best - all the time! Some stuff gets pricey and I/we can't help that,

Look to be honest, in over 20 years of owning cars, this is an isolated incident, usually I've been treated very well by mechanics, so I don't think you are all nasty at all, I just have a bit of a grudge against this particular lot right at this moment!!

I really appreciate there is a forum like this where questions can be asked, and answered by really knowledgable people, it is great.

Thanks

Angie.

Well, good news!

I took the car in today, he showed me the pads, and yes, one of them hada very curious gouge mark right across it which looked ground out.

He offered to do the job for free labour, and new pads at cost price ($35), which I accepted, when I went back to pick the car up, he said he'd been talking to his supplier, and they had agreed to credit him for the cost of those damaged pads, so I ended up not having to pay a cent for the work!! :)

Very happy!!

It is good to read that things worked out. Smile. We need positive stuff like this every once in a while.

There really are honest shops out there willing to make things right for their customers.
