2007 Hyundai Elantra Brake Humming and Dash Lights Sign In

Hello,

I just recently purchased a 2007 Hyundai Elantra. The other day the ABS and BRAKE lights came on randomly while driving, but when I restarted the car they were gone. Today they came back on while driving but now they’re accompanied by a low pitched humming noise when I brake. I will attach a video. The noise almost sounds like a fog horn, it’s very loud. No screeching, scraping, or grinding noises from the wheels like what I’ve experienced before with shot pads. This noise seems to be coming from under the brake petal and the dash area. The brakes also seem to be working perfectly fine besides this noise. The pedal did start vibrating slightly as well. The noise is not there when the car is off, but starts again anytime I press the brake with power to the car. Even in park.
I should note that this car did just pass a safety inspection 2 months ago, in a state that does extensive safety checks, and I have not driven it too much since I have gotten it. Brake fluid levels fine too.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you.

? Even in park? I fixed on just that for now. Fluid full somehow then it's telling itself to activate ABS.

IDK how it could as sensors should read zero speed unless one or more can touch a star wheel - perhaps.

It needs a code reading a 2007 would have something saved of course it's not normal.

Passed a safety check/inspection? Place by place if there were no codes, CEL or a warning pending or if it couldn't read or just a visual. Some take wheels off, some don't, some are live with your DMV some may not have to be that changes like the wind what is required.

I take it, it's all yours, no seller warranty so get codes read first drive carefully this is whacked not common to me.

It might have been some repair to sell it didn't work out properly I/we may never know so start over NOW up to tow it there?

Activated ABS without needing it is far worse than not having it at all.

Some may default if you pulled a fuse DEFINATELY WOULD SET A CODE and system should be inoperative - regular braking feel but may not pass a re-inspection soon if somehow you had to even fixed a time/mile period must be had or "not ready."

The short - get codes, if nothing seek higher end readings this stuff is monitored as operation or sees a fault it surely has one,

There will be codes stored in the ABS module. The first step is to get them read. You will need a scan tool capable of accessing the ABS

Thanks guys,

I did quickly inspect the fuses and they appeared fine. Decided on a tow for now, don’t want to risk it.
I had another person suspect a leak in the brake booster. So I pumped my brakes with the car off until they were stiff, kept my foot there, turned on the engine, and the brake then pushed out towards my foot before taking some extra force to go inward towards the floor.
After thinking about all of this I have noticed that sometimes it takes more/less pressure to brake at different times. Sometimes I lightly push, other times the pedal seems to go down further. Not sure if that’s normal or something that’s indicative of an issue.
Should have an answer in a few days and will update here.
Unfortunately the reader I have apparently doesn’t do ABS. Realized that after getting no codes back.
Thanks again!

Stop trying to guess from symptoms. You aren't going to have any idea until you have some codes. This could be any number of causes, all electrical related.

Once the ABS light comes on, the system is disabled.

Do as suggested. Know that codes that show something do not know if a wire is rubbing and can short.

Lots of years now with this ran across a few only all DEFAULTED to NO ABS action. Some would start lights be out and quickly on when touching brake pedal or when in gear and moving.

I can't say what will be found for this one codes would really help as Hammer Time just said. If that doesn't show anything it needs a better reading.

Assorted found by me. Few now, drum rear brakes dust make contact inside, cleaned it and solved.

The magority can have gap wrong or wrong driveshaft exactly or harmed somehow.

ALL defaulted to NO issue stopping AFTER WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON.

RED brake warnings? All I know of mean SERIOUS problem OR same warning that parking brake isn't fully released OR low fluid most now say low fluid, look at the wiring going to master cylinder.

Can't delay, guess or fuss NONE made any reaction sitting still as suggested + you feel a buzzing/humming?

All on the same page here THIS CAN'T BE IGNORED. Found, fixed and proven it's all over with as solved. I don't know a way via web and think you get it too. It's strange to me has to be dangerous if just not knowing so yes I would tow this an accident isn't worth it,

You do need to have the ABS codes pulled.
The problem you described sounds like a possible bad wheel speed sensor. The module tests the speed sensors when the wheels are moving So when you turn the car on It has to be moving before the sensor failure is noticed and the light is turned on
The noise sounds like it could be a bad wheel bearing, possibly related to the sensor problem. When you're driving down the road swerve from side to side, if the noise gets louder going to one side and then quieter to the other, it's a Wheel bearing problem
