wheel rim clearcoat bad orange peel - will this fix it Sign In

it started raining yesterday so I sprayed my clearcoat inside the house temp was about 68-70 in the house, and I am guessing it was colder in the basement so the clearcoat went on wrong and has really bad orange peel.

my plan: wet sand back the clear with 2000 grit -> polish with Meguiar's G19220 Ultimate Polish. Will this work?

side note* I have to re-spray some clear coat over some existing clear coat for another unrelated project - would sanding with 1200 grit provide a good enough surface for the new clear to stick or should I go lower in grit?

Thanks in advance for all suggestions.

All this is dependent on the type of paint used and whether it is compatible with overcoating. Some paints will have a bad reaction when you do that.

Check with the manufacturer for recoating instructions.

I think you will be sanding for an awful long time with 2000. Maybe start with some 600 and finish with 1500.
You also need to check with the manufacturer on how soon you can sand it.

Thank you for the advice - I will check to make sure the paint can be recoated.

Should I start with 600 and go up to 1500 then polish for the orange peel? Or did you mean to use these grits for re-clear coating the unrelated side project.

Either way. If you're going to repaint you can stop after the 600. If you're going to buff it, finish with 1500.
