please help- need expert advice on rust removal and repainting!! Sign In

Hello,
Could somebody please help me with my question?
I got into a little accident some parts on the car are dented, the paint came off and now there is rust.
The unaffected edges are raising up and rusting spots keep growing bigger.

All I want to do is make the car looks somewhat presentable make sure the paint stays on and blends in with the rest as much as possible. I am not concerned with the actual dent issue at hand.

I was told to cover edges of the rust spot with tape and remove rust with rustoleum or sand paper. then use acetone to remove oil residue. then apply primer and then outdoor enamel white glossy paint?

Do you guys have any suggestions? Was I given the correct information? what kind of supplies do i use and can i do it outside?

Thank you so very much! I really appreciate your help!!

p.s this are two pictures of the rusty spots

Pics wont show for me - try photobucket and a link to the pics. Sounds like old body work if paint came off vs scratched up. You can slow it down by appearance but it will win keeping in mind the back side is probably worse where you can't see.

You can sand your brains out and never get it all off and it will push about anything off of it. Rust needs to be killed or cut out with new metal welded in or panel replaced for any success that lasts.

There is a water based primer I've used to kill it when small like a scratch seems to help. "Rust Reformer" by name then you prime over it or paint directly. For cosmetics on a vehicle you no doubt need pro help and using or doing the wrong things now will make the repair harder or whole panels will need to be replaced.

Get advice from a body shop on how to leave it if not fixing it now. Rust wins with about everything I've ever tried eventually. Just bending, pulling out dented metal, welding or heat makes it go faster later. A lot depends on grade of the metal to begin with and you can't change that now,

I fixed your links

I don't know what you expect to accomplish here but you might as well forget about it. You have some major collision damage and you can't simply paint over it. Your choices are pretty much either repair it correctly or live with it. There is no half way.

Thanks HT for making those show. Those are gone no matter what you do. Yes, clever body work can straighten those but will forever be a problem. Major damage there and as said the back sides probably look worse rust wise,
