Vauxhall Insignia - Bodywork damage and rust Sign In

Hi guys,

I'm hoping to get some advice on how much work will be needed to fix some body damage to my Insignia. My wife managed to scrape the side of the car across a concrete bollard quite a while back.

Now rust has set in, and paintwork around the original damage is starting to come away. I want to figure out whether its going to be worth getting repaired or not, and (roughly) what would be done as part of the repair.

There is damage to the passenger front door, passenger rear door, though no rust here.
The damage to the part of the car that is underneath the doors and towards the rear wheel is where the majority of the damage and rust is.

I've attached some photos so you can see what I'm dealing with. Any advice is welcome!

Thanks!

I deleted your photos. They are way too large and make the thread impossible to read. Please reduce the size so they fit into the box and repost them.

Before you even do that I will tell you that there is no way to permanently repair severe rust like that. You can make repairs that will be only temporary but the rust will come back in very short order.

Most of what you are showing is a 1/4in of Bondo falling off from a previous repair.

Thanks for the reply. I've resized and re-posted the photos so they should be reasonable dimensions now.

Disappointing to hear that the rust isn't something that cannot be repaired permanently. What generally happens in this situation, then? The rust continues to spread until it causes the structure of the car to become unsafe?

As the rust spreads, will more paint come off of the car?

Like i said, what you are seeing is a previous attempt to repair rust and this is the result. They just coated it with a thick coat of filler and that is falling off.

Rust is like cancer and the only way to stop it is to completely cut out the rusted area and replace it with new metal. That would be nearly impossible in the locations you have the problem. I'm afraid this is an eventual terminal problem for the car. The fight is to prevent it, not repair it.
