Unbelievable rear view mirror issue (advice requested!) Sign In

Recently I bought a 1987 Chevrolet Blazer K5 in decent shape. The windshield appears to be either original or at least 10 years old based on normal visual wear. Upon paying for the vehicle it didn't have a rear view mirror and unfortunately everything I have tried to attach a rear view mirror to the windshield has failed miserably.

In order I have tried:
All three Autozone adhesives, multiple times
buying a new rear view mirror
silicone adhesive from home depot (for cars/boats etc.)
E6000 adhesive

I get to the point where the metal knob sticks to the mirror however when I attach the mirror to the metal knob and gently attempt to adjust the angle it all falls off. The best theory I have to go on is perhaps since the windshield is old maybe it has been scratched and is no longer flat (became porous?). Before anyone claims "he's not cleaning/prepping," lets lay that theory to rest. I have used alcohol, followed the directions, intentionally not followed direction, used prep-pads, used glass cleaner, used sandpaper on one metal knob (of 2 total), etc. Much variation here in my attempts.

Is there any other thing I can try besides paying a professional to mount this thing? What would you do? Thanks.

These come in half a dozen different brands. I've never had one not work when the instructions are followed.

Also make sure you look at the expiration date on the package before you buy it.

To add: Clean glass with one edge razor then even carb or brake cleaner followed by rubbing alcohol and the same to the metal button and wait.

As already said make sure to follow instructions on proper product. It will likely say to hold in place for a minute or two and wait to install mirror IDK 15 min to an hour. Wait a day!

If this is too much of a pest just go to an auto glass place and let them do it. Some may do this for little to nothing (been a while and hope longer) but stuff works. The HUGE problem is when Rain-X has been used but shouldn't be on inside glass but you just got it so who knows there?

It will work with right products and prep - got the T-Shirt with the damn thingsMad

With HT. Never had one pop off using this. Cleaning is very important. I believe that the instructions say to leave it set for 24 hrs before attaching mirror, if they dont say that, thats what I do anyway.

You could always drill a hole through the glass and put a screw through it to hold the mirror on...Sly
