Question on replacement hatch struts

RE: 2000 Chevy Astro the left rear hatch has the defogger switch on the strut that can be removed when the strut is replaced. I want to buy replacement struts on line.
Question: Can the shaft knob be unscrewed off all replacement struts so that the defogger switch can be installed?

I doubt it. Why not just buy the right one? You could try the one you have now but if OE the replacement may not match exactly even if detachable so get the proper one is my suggestion,
