I had a dented quarter panel after a minor accident a few weeks back. I sent the car to a body shop which did a satisfactory job. After I got the car back, I used a cheap digital paint thickness gauge to measure the depth of the paint.

Everywhere else on the car the gauge reports thicknesses between 180-200 micrometers, but on the area they did the repair, it reports 950-1000 micrometers (1mm).

Anyone have any idea as to why the paint is that thick on the repainted section? I was expecting anywhere from 400-500 micrometers, but 1mm is way too much. I hope they didn't smother the area with bondo. I hate that stuff with a passion.

A paint thickness gauge? ................... really?

What the hell are you trying to prove? You said the work was satisfactory.

I'm sure there are numerous layers of prep for the repair to include primer, scratch filler and maybe even clear coat. The aftermarket painting process is nothing like the manufacturing process.

Wow, talk about waking up on the wrong side of bed. This might be a long shot, but if you read the last sentence in my post, you just might figure out what the hell I'm trying to prove.

Anyway, I'll just take my question to another forum where the members are bit more polite. Thanks.

Smothered with bondo? Less than 1mm? Are you serious?

What exactly do you think is going to create that smooth, paintable surface?

One millimeter .................. That is less than 4 one hundredths of an inch at it's deepest point. Get serious.

I feel sorry for your customers. Your attitude reminds me of a shady mechanic I once visited.
