2008 Tundra front grill/AC problems Sign In

I had some damage to my front grill. An Object from another vehicle hit my front grill while I was going down the highway. Every Since my AC stopped working. I tried recharging the system but now it wont hold a charge. Im afraid I might have a damaged line somewhere?

Re: 2008 Tundra front grill/AC problems Sign In

Is this accident rate damage or just a small part of debris hitting and going thru grille? May be an insurance deal?

OK - First and common to me is the condenser up front of the radiator is first to get incoming air and hence incoming damage. You probably can see a dinged spot and some oiliness around it. Any leak anywhere you can lose your charge but since you know this and it stopped then that would be highly likely and visual to see.

Your call as it could be and probably should be verified and amount of oil lost either guessed at by the mess made if any plus what can be retrieved out of old condenser if that is in fact the item with the leak.

Don't just blow in refrigerant but rather this would require starting over from a full well held vacuum with specific charge by weight,

Where are you located? This suggests in your profile you are in AK and wouldn't know if A/C worked properly or not right now then location shows another country all together. Which is it or both your posts get dumped!

Other locked till you come back with something credible,

Yes I pretty much was going down the highway and some debris from a guys van smacked right into my grill. The radiator do have some visible damage. A small ding. Thats where I hear the hissing sound from when I tried to recharge the AC.

Re: 2008 Tundra front grill/AC problems Sign In

Where are you really from? Understood you can leak refrigerant and damage condenser but why are you asking for A/C at all in Anchorage, AK where you said you were from? Most folks wouldn't know if A/C even worked yet and many in AK would order a vehicle without it at all so what's the story? Other post is about how noisy engine is while quite cold - doesn't make much sense sport,

Hi. Yea I understand where you coming from. This is a on going problem I had since I lived in NC (FT Bragg) where I was previously stationed. This incedent happened during the summer. Now that I have the funds to fix it that's why I am asking about it now. My AC is no use to anyone now being in Anchorage but I know its something I need to get fixed. Let me see if I can hunt down the picture I took of it for you.

Hey - mod view shows your signal and where from. Albania! That's the other side of the world if correct! You aren't even sending posts from AK at all so asking you what's the deal? If you are trying to fix this from another country completely to be fixed when you return fine but say so. How would YOU know if cold starts are noisy if not there yourself right now. Temps show 38F right now - not cold at all but too cold for A/C in Anchorage.

Only A/C has a chance of doing in cold weather is during a short range of temps can kick on with defrost request and mix of heat and defrost/defog and takes some humidity out but more for a good bit higher temps than you really have now. Refrigerant doesn't work at those temps and when that cold can't or would lock up so either way you really wouldn't be aware of it not working at all. Yes if you did try to add or someone you would hear is leak out either slow or all at once with a real hole from debris.

Last chance - EXPLAIN YOUR SITUATION OR WHOLE THREADS GO TO A SPAMMER'S BIN AS THIS SMACKS OF TESTING THE WATER HERE AS A SPAMMER! Got it?

Pic in the daylight with that view without a grille at all?

Yes that shows clear damage that would cause a leak. In Winter it wouldn't be oily but now you said that was last year. Come back with a new reason how you are a credible user of this site please or have the end the discussion,

Re: 2008 Tundra front grill/AC problems Sign In

Sir I also posted about a knocking noise in another thread so I was hoping to resolve those two issues. Again Im sorry for all the trouble. I will return back to Anchorage in a few days (by FRI) so I will be home and if I can still post here I should show up under a US Anchorage AK IP.Thanks for your understanding and sorry for the confusion.

Re: 2008 Tundra front grill/AC problems Sign In

All is OK - you explained. The problem is as said with the condenser no doubt even if not the only damage from the debris hitting it. Seems by that pic there's no grille on there at all so was a hefty hit.

Here to help but the trouble is if you aren't at the vehicle to check or do things a shop where the vehicle is would be handling this and you shouldn't need a web site at all but talk to the tech(s) involved.

Cold noisy starts are then go away are frequently oil related issues, lack of changing it on a decent schedule or wrong type, viscosity.

So, if you are totally elsewhere and aren't doing this then I can't compete with the person who is with it right in front of them. If they are not up to this work then YOU send it along to another shop that can deal with the problems.

I'm familiar with AK and been to Anchorage in July however still not warm enough to need A/C for me personally. I'm sure there are days and times you would - no question there.

Both issues you've mentioned require someone being there and the work is going to take a tech not just any friend who might be watching out for the vehicle. You should be dealing with the shop and tech for what you want done to this for your return is the point. Anchorage has dealers and shops that can handle this and IMO not much of it is going to be DIY except changing the oil about now,

Re: 2008 Tundra front grill/AC problems Sign In

OK. Thanks for the advice. The pic I took was with the hood up so the grill was there. It received damage too cracking one side of it and knocking off my Toyota logo. This past summer it got into the 70's in Anchorage. It got fairly warm enough to use AC but it wasn't boiling hot. Im not sure what this summer will have in store. I will be sure to check the velocity of my oil to see if that helps the knocking. Anyways thanks for the help. It gives me some things to think about and check.

Re: 2008 Tundra front grill/AC problems Sign In

AK is warmer by tons than where I am in MA - sub zero stuff vs unusually warmer in AK and West coast US.

Sounds like enough damage to this vehicle to take a couple trades or choose a dealer that should tend to all both any body work needed and other things.

Hey - AK and other cold or even known hot places really benefit from using synthetic oils still of correct viscosity (thickness) of the oil. I won't second guess a true tech from AK but would probably use a 0-20, 0-30 or 0-40 now available in synthetic that should match some suggested viscosities for cooler to cold climates. BTW - Understand the Winter blood if you live it when 60s to 70s come it feel like a heat wave.

Just yesterday not far away it was 45F or so and a car with convertible top down loving it as it's been very cold here so felt like Summer for a day.

Again - Can't really help from a web site for your needs for you. More often a place like this is a DIYer with the vehicle right there to check this or that with a problem or looking for how to do or check something.

A/C is a trade to itself and if you want that to work and fix it now should be done by a tech and with the A/C machines up and running. Most where I am put stuff aside and out of the way but would fix broken stuff and deal with the charge up when warmer weather comes most from accident damage or even unseen a stone or something thru the grille and you don't even know it right now.

In fact even a Toyota dealer may send all A/C work out to a shop that does just that any time of year as it just takes up space and doesn't work in cold, can't check that it performs and plenty of other things to do other than that right now,

Re: 2008 Tundra front grill/AC problems Sign In

Hi. Thanks for the advice on the oil Velocity. I think im taking your advice and going synthetic. I think I may wait until near the summer to worry to much about the AC issues. Im still recovering from the $1200 dollar tires I had to put on it. Yes I know Anchorage have been fairly mild lately. I don't mind. Ironically im not a big fan of the cold anyways.

Re: 2008 Tundra front grill/AC problems Sign In

It's spelled "Viscosity" and listed in owner's manual what it should have for what temps vehicle is exposed to. Actually Anchorage is moderate for AK so huge a state can't know all of it.

Still matters even with a milder Winter right now. Might suggest leave one viscosity all year round - look it up or any shop would or should know what to do to ready this for you already said. Actually hope it's just oil and not something worse. If this sits long times at a time it might act funky and noisy for a bit but should still be used or properly stored if away for any long time.

A/C would be better fixed IMO in season. Now that it's been empty for some time if being used it should be disabled if you can get someone to just do that for now so compressor can't even try to operate. I think you may find a dealer the bargain for the fixes all around for this and eat the cost as doing things right with right parts will be the bargain in the long run,

T

Understand costs of stuff like even tires for this never mind more for being in AK no doubt
